I want to thank all parents, students, and teachers who supported the 2011 Scholastic Book Fairs at Colton Middle and Terrace Hills Middle Schools. For those of you who didn't get to participate, don't dispair. You now have the opportunity to buy online. Click on http://scholastic.com/schoolbookfairs and follow the directions for purchases at your respected school site. The online book fairs will last through November 1 at THMS and November 4 at CMS. It's certainly not to early to think about books as XMAS gifts. Keep supporting both CMS and THMS libraries.
Image at http://www.st-andrews.org/Customized/Uploads/images/Calendar%20Images/ScholasticBookFair2011-2012.JPG On a bright Wednesday morning of September 18, Jonathan Auxier delighted seventh grade students & teachers alike with his Peter Nimble presentations at the Colton Middle School library. As one teacher later reminded me, local author school visits are rare indeed. In fact, this is the first time I recall ever hearing a writer speak at a school setting. If one ever gave presentation during my own school years, it's longer faded from memory. As a way to thank Mr. Auxier and cherist this momentous occasion, I created a special animoto video. I also included the link for downloads on MAC computers. http://animoto.com/play/7LV7KmpAez2nCcsEv1JW4w Enjoy..... Over the next few days, local author Jonathan Auxier will host book talks and signings to CJUSD students and staff. He will speak for the first four class periods and lunch at Colton Middle School on Wednesday September 21, 2011. For those who won't get to hear him at Colton Middle, he will appear again at the Colton High School Redlands Barnes & Noble bookstore at the Lugonia Shopping Center on Saturday September 24, 2011. Take a look at Jonathan's website at http://www.thescop.com/ to learn more about his writing.
After I read his Peter Nimble book & listen to Jonathan speak, I will post further thoughts on the Book Club blog on this site. In the meantime, enjoy the Peter Nmble You Tube trailer. Immediately following the CHS Book fair at Barnes & Noble, Scholastic will host two events at Colton Middle and Terrace Hills from Monday October 10-Friday October 14, 2011. CMS and THMS students may purchase books and other stationary items before school, during class visits, and at lunch time. Parents may also visit after their respective teacher conferences. Pay attention to the CMS and THMS announcement for exact times. A percentage of the proceeds will be used to purchase recreational reading materials for the libraries. Image located at http://bwpta.org/site/images/stories/library/59018_complete_theme_art.jpg As I have participated in numerous Barnes & Noble Book Fairs for Colton High, Colton Middle, and Terrace Hills Middle, the primary objective has remained the same: raise as much money as possible for library books for each of the respective school libraries. The upcoming Colton High School Book Fair on Saturday September 24 will include many similar activities such as games, storytime, and music to attract visitors. However, it will slightly differ in scope in that others will also directly reap the benefits of the event.
I ask this question of CJUSD educators. Do you need more money for class supplies? I suspect many will answer in the affirmative. I invite all interested parties to attend a free grant writing workshop sponsored by Barnes & Noble at 11 AM-12PM. The CHS library also receives proceeds for those who also buy the book used during the session. How many of you like to uncover new children's literature-- particularly by a local author? Jonathan Auxier, author of Peter Thimble books, will generously offer his support to our cause. Not only will he give a book talk & have a signing during the 10 AM- 11 AM slot, he will speak at an assembly at Colton Middle School on Wednesday September 21. His books will be available for purchase at the Redlands store. I look forward to seeing many new faces as well as those who have supported the CHS library in the past on the 24th. I specifically tailored an Animoto video for this occasion. http://animoto.com/play/0VnZU5iGnqxlkiBhAxojng Image from http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ULJ2tlK_jSk/TiUFxfqUipI/AAAAAAAABgA/0M7N6FNpX8M/s400/BNCafe.jpg Have you decided what to buy for Father's Day, graduation, or an upcoming wedding? Have you planned what you will read you over the summer? Do not despair. You can address all these concerns and support the CHS library by buying items at the May 14 book fair at the Redlands Barnes & Noble store located at the Lugonia Shopping Center. The book store hours will be from 9 AM- 11 PM. While you are reading your new purchases and partaking of the delicious foods & drinks from the Cafe (these purchases also support the CHS library book totals), you can watch & listen to book talks, music performances, quilting & cooking demonstration by CHS staff & students throughout the day. This may seem like a ways off, but spring break for all CJUSD students and staff will occur for two weeks prior to the event. Therefore, preparations are now under way.
First, CMS library will begin Scholastic "One for Books" campaign Students and staff put loose change or dollars inside the "One for Books" box. This benefits kids inside and outside the school. Students will earn tickets for a book drawing at the end of the book fair for every dollar contribution. Scholastic will match the total proceeds through charitable contributions to Marine Toys for Tots, Kids in Distressed Situations, and Kids in Need. The larger the proceeds, the greater benefit to more students. Information on the One for Books program is available at http://www.scholastic.com/bookfairs/programs/oneforbooks/ A website exclusive to the book fair is now up and running at http://bookfairs.scholastic.com/bookfairs/cptoolkit/publish/coltonmiddle. You will find book fair hours and events on this page. Take a look at an Animoto video promotion at http://animoto.com/play/2bBOaiodbZ0cE7CuVu9R7w Participate in enhancing literacy for CMS students before and during the book fair! Remember reading or listening to stories such as The night before Christmas, The Grinch that stole Christmas, and/or The nativity story? You have several opportunities during this holiday season to purchase a book for a loved one, friend, colleague, and classmate. On Wednesday December 8, 2010, the Redlands Barnes & Noble will host a book fair for Terrace Hills Middle School. At Colton High School, students and faculty may purchase and/or donate books for the Merry XMAS books exchanges during both lunches on Friday December 10, 2010. Educators may also purchase books at 20-80% at local Scholastic Book Fair Warehouses. Look at http://www.scholastic.com/bookfairs/events/warehouse/index.asp for futher details. For those of you who are unable to participate in any of the mentioned events, pay attention to sales & promotions from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders, Target, Walmart, or any other major outlet. Make sure to visit the local library for holiday activities as well. Literacy is a precious gift especially during this time of the year.
The previous Animoto holiday video will inspire even more. http://animoto.com/play/RkNT69cYcxMLnPAr9uFOEQ?autostart=true Image from http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_CdFSqHdNIGk/SSyYRrfcsuI/AAAAAAAAB94/Wwd3YiWivDs/s320/gifts.jpg Scholastic Books just celebrated its 90th Aniversary through its "Read Now" campaign, headlined by musician Taylor Swift. In an almost 35 minute podcast, Taylor answers questions about reading, song writing, and school from students across the country. She concludes her presentation with by performing a song from her new hit album. Remember & follow through with Taylor's message. Read a book or any other reading material each day. It positively impacts every aspect of your life.
